Passed first try after 3 weeks of evening study

I came to the UK as a software developer five years ago and finally became eligible to apply for ILR. I was nervous because I had only 3 weeks to study around my full-time job. I tried a paid app at first but the questions felt repetitive and the ads were everywhere. A friend recommended PathCert. The chapter summaries are clear without being overwhelming, and the practice tests felt very close to the real one in style. I did the three practice sets twice each, focused extra time on history (which I knew was my weakest area), and reviewed the explanations every time I got something wrong. Test day was calm. I finished in about 25 minutes and got 23 out of 24. The biggest thing for me was that PathCert is free and respects your time. No pop-ups, no upsells. I am incredibly grateful.

Priya's tips
  • Read each chapter summary fully at least twice before doing practice tests
  • Track which chapters you score weakest on and revisit those sections
  • Take at least one full timed practice test in one sitting before exam day
  • Sleep well the night before. The test is 45 minutes and clear thinking helps

5 weeks (after failed first attempt)

Failed the first time, passed the second with this method

I will be honest. I failed my first attempt with 16 out of 24. I had used a free YouTube playlist and a cheap PDF I found online. The questions on the real test were nothing like what I had seen, especially around dates and the order of monarchs. After failing I felt awful but decided to take it more seriously. I gave myself 5 weeks. I read each PathCert chapter twice, made my own notes, and took the practice tests once a week without looking at any answers until the end. I also focused on the important dates list and the key facts panels at the end of each chapter. I passed the second time with 22 out of 24. My advice: do not rush, do not rely on random YouTube videos, and use the explanations on PathCert. They genuinely teach you, not just tell you the answer.

Ahmed's tips
  • Do not rush. Failing wastes £50, so take the time to actually learn the material
  • Make your own notes from the chapter summaries. Writing helps memory
  • Memorise the key dates and key facts panels. They come up often
  • Read every explanation, not just check the answer

Studying with English as a second language

I am from Spain and English is not my first language. I was very nervous about the test because I was worried the questions would use difficult vocabulary. I tried two paid apps before finding PathCert. The first one had so many ads that I could barely concentrate. The second one charged me £15 and the questions were poorly written, with grammar errors that confused me even more. PathCert is free and the language in every chapter and question is clear and consistent. The explanations helped me understand both the answer and the language around it. I studied for 6 weeks alongside my English classes. I passed with 21 out of 24. To anyone for whom English is a second language: do not skip the chapter reading. The practice tests are great but the chapters teach you the words you will see on the day.

Maria's tips
  • Read each chapter slowly. Look up any words you do not know
  • Practise reading the questions out loud to get used to the language
  • Take untimed practice tests first, then move to timed ones
  • Do not panic on test day. You have 45 minutes for 24 questions, plenty of time

10 days (in short blocks)

Passed in 10 days while juggling shifts as a nurse

As an NHS nurse working night shifts, I had almost no continuous time to study. My ILR application deadline was approaching and I needed to pass within 2 weeks. I downloaded the PathCert chapter summaries to read on my breaks and used the practice test on the bus to and from work. The thing that worked for me was the bite-sized format. Each section is short enough to read in one break. I focused only on Chapters 3 and 5 (history and government) because those had the most facts to memorise. I scored 20 out of 24. Not perfect, but a solid pass. The biggest thing PathCert gave me was the confidence that I had covered everything important without having to read a 180-page handbook from cover to cover.

Kwame's tips
  • Use chapter summaries as bite-sized study during breaks
  • If short on time, prioritise history and government (Chapters 3 and 5)
  • Do not aim for perfection. The pass mark is 75%, not 100%
  • Take the practice tests on your phone during commutes
