In, on, at, under, behind: Prepositions of place and time

Where exactly is it? When exactly? The small words that pin things to a place or a moment.

👨🏽‍🏫
👋 Mr. Gee says

Prepositions are tiny words. They make English speakers laugh when learners use the wrong one. Today we make sure you do not get laughed at.

The story

Where is everything?

Look at my desk. The book is ON the desk. My pen is IN the cup. My phone is UNDER the book. The lamp is BEHIND the laptop. The window is ABOVE the desk.

Now look at time. The class starts AT 9. I work IN the morning. My birthday is ON 15 October. I will see you ON Monday. I will see you IN the summer.

In, on, at, under, behind, above, between. Each one means something specific. Each one tells the listener exactly where or when.

1

Prepositions of PLACE

IN = inside something. 'In the box, in the room, in London, in India.'

ON = on the surface of. 'On the table, on the wall, on the floor.'

AT = at a specific point. 'At the door, at the station, at the corner, at home, at school, at work.'

UNDER = below. 'Under the bed.'

ABOVE / OVER = higher than. 'Above the door. Over the river.'

BEHIND = at the back of. 'Behind the chair.'

IN FRONT OF = before. 'In front of the house.'

NEXT TO / BESIDE = right beside. 'Next to my brother.'

BETWEEN = with something on each side. 'Between two trees.'

2

Prepositions of TIME

AT = exact time. 'At 9 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at lunchtime.'

ON = days and dates. 'On Monday, on 15 October, on Christmas Day.'

IN = months, years, seasons, parts of the day. 'In May, in 2024, in summer, in the morning.'

Memorise these: at 9 o'clock, on Monday, in May. AT for moments, ON for days, IN for longer periods.

3

Prepositions of DIRECTION

TO = movement toward. 'I am going to the shop.'

FROM = starting point. 'I came from work.'

INTO = movement inside. 'She walked into the room.'

OUT OF = movement outside. 'He came out of the kitchen.'

UP / DOWN = movement upward or downward.

Translation tip

Prepositions are the HARDEST part of English for almost every learner. The reason: they are often translated differently in different languages. The trick: do not translate. Memorise common combinations as phrases. 'At home', 'on Monday', 'in May', 'in love', 'at school'.

Your turn

Practice prompts

Try these on paper or out loud. Mr. Gee's rule: practice today, do not save it for tomorrow.

  1. Look around your room. Describe where 5 things are using prepositions.
  2. Write 3 sentences about time: at, on, in. (At 6 o'clock, on Friday, in December.)
  3. Translate this: 'My phone is on the table. My keys are in my bag. The cat is under the chair.'
  4. Common errors to avoid: 'on home' (wrong, it's 'at home'), 'in Monday' (wrong, it's 'on Monday'), 'at May' (wrong, it's 'in May').
Take this with you

Place: IN inside, ON surface, AT point. Time: AT moment, ON day/date, IN month/season. Direction: TO toward, FROM origin. Memorise common phrases as fixed expressions.

Mr. Gee's tip of the day

Read aloud every day. Even if it sounds funny. Your tongue needs practice.
